As of May 1
st, there 4,546 children in foster care in South Carolina and 3,243 of those children were in regular (non-therapeutic) placements. Unfortunately, we have only 1,603 licensed regular foster homes. As a result, 62% of children in our care have to be placed outside their home counties meaning that we are separating them from their schools, churches, friends and support networks.
We are doing a county-by-county push to recruit homes and the next 90 days we are focusing on Horry County. In Horry County, as of May 1
st there were 212 children in regular foster care, but only 72 licensed homes. Therefore, we are working to do an education campaign in the local community to try to recruit more homes
and raise awareness of the issues facing children in care.
